Four Times Plane Crashed From Pilot Error
In your lifetime, you are more likely to die from thunder strike than from air transportation. The safety of this medium is guaranteed through safety practices and thorough training of pilots. But airplane accidents still occur every once in a while. And although bad weather and mechanical factors account for some accidents, pilots have also been found wanting in many instances. Here are four times pilot error has caused plane accidents in the past.
Aeroflot Flight 593 Crash of March 23, 1994
In 1994, Yaroslav Kudrinsky, a relief pilot, made a deadly mistake. The error cost him his life as well as 74 other lives – including those of his two children.
Hours after take-off from Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow, Kudrinsky brought his children to the cockpit. It was in the middle of the night, the pilot and the co-pilot were away on a short recess. While Kudrinsky gave the children permission to toy with the controls and sit on the captain’s seat. Needless to mention that this was against regulations, it didn’t seem like a big deal to Kudrinsky. The plane was on autopilot after all.
Things started going askew when Eldar (the older child) switched the airplane system from autopilot into manual. The airplane steered toward a new path and smashed into the mountains. It was bound for Hong Kong but crash-landed in Siberia.
TransAsia Airways Flight 235 Crash of February 4, 2015
The TransAsia Airways flight 235 was downed because a certain pilot tampered with the wrong switch. Immediately after take-off from the Taipei Songshan Airport on February 2015, one of the flight’s engines failed. The Captain (pilot) responded by turning off an engine. Except that he had unknowingly killed the functional engine, shut downing the airplane system in the process.
TransAsia Airways Flight 235 crashed into the Keelung River in Taiwan. 43 people were killed including the pilot.
Tuninter Flight 1153 Crash of March 2005
Shafik Al Gharbi (Captain) and Ali Kebaier Lassoued (Co-pilot) were fingered as offenders for the loss of lives on the Tuninter Flight 1153. They allowed fear to cloud their judgments and completely abandoned professional practices prescribed for emergencies. A massive mistake.
When the flight, headed to Bari, Italy from Djebar-Zarzis Airport, Tunisia, exhausted its fuel and banked, Al Gharbi and Lassoued adopted ‘unorthodox practices’. Recordings from the flight deck captured the Captain praying to Allah for assistance instead of taking expedient actions.
The aftermath of the turmoil was calamitous. Out of the 49 passengers on Tuninter Flight 1153, 26 people lost their lives. Al Gharbi and Lassoued were each given a sentence of ten years’ imprisonment. They were found guilty of deliberately crashing the aircraft.
KLM Flight 1736 and Pan Am Flight 1736 Crash of March 27, 1977
March 27, 1977 is a disastrous date in the history of the aviation industry. On that day, at the Los Rodeos Airport (called Tenerife North Airport today), a miscommunication between the Air Traffic Control and airplane crew sparked a bloodbath.
583 people lost their lives in total.
According to reports, the day was foggy. The pilots of KLM Flight 1736 found it difficult to see what was in front of them. And they were blanked out from the views of the Air Traffic Control. So, they smashed into the Pan Am Flight 1736 that was also on the runway, after assuming that they had been cleared for take-off.
Many passengers perished as a result. What was entirely strange about the accident was that the two aircrafts had both been diverted from different airports due to terrorist attack scare. Under normal circumstances, they had any reason being at the same airport, at the same time.
